Durham is a city of contrasts. We're home to world-class universities, cutting-edge research institutions, and a thriving economy. Yet many of our young people—particularly those from historically marginalized communities—are locked out of these opportunities.
The gap between Durham's economic potential and the reality facing too many youth is stark:
- Youth unemployment remains persistently high, particularly among young people of color
- Many young adults are trapped in low-wage service jobs with no advancement potential
- Educational attainment gaps limit access to high-growth industries
- Justice involvement creates additional barriers to employment
- Limited professional networks prevent access to opportunity
For youth facing multiple barriers—unemployment, housing insecurity, justice involvement, disconnection from education—the pathway to stable employment can feel impossible.
